Application Process

The University of Fairfax, an independent, non-profit graduate institution, was established to help address accelerating shortages in qualified information security personnel who can effectively protect the nation's information and information systems.

PROGRAM ADMISSION CRITERIA

Applicants are evaluated individually based on their professional experience, academic credentials and interview. In cases where an applicant lacks sufficient relevant professional experience, prerequisite courses may be required.

Doctoral Degree Applicants

Admission to the doctoral program at the University of Fairfax requires that applicants:

  • have at least five years of relevant professional experience, and
  • hold a Master's degree from an accredited institution, or hold an equivalent degree from a foreign institution, as evaluated by WES, AACRAO or IERF; and, for students whose primary language is not English, earn a score of 550 or higher on the TOEFL; or
  • hold a Master of Science degree from the University of Fairfax; or
  • hold a baccalaureate degree and have completed 24 credits of the MSISM degree program at the University of Fairfax with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
Master's Degree Applicants

Admission to the MSISM degree program at the University of Fairfax requires that applicants:
  • have at least five years of relevant professional experience, and
  • hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution, or hold an equivalent degree from a foreign institution as evaluated by WES, AACRAO or IERF; and, for students whose primary language is not English, earn a score of 550 or higher on the TOEFL.
  • have earned a minimum of 90 undergraduate credits from an accredited institution and have completed the University of Fairfax Best Practices in Information Security graduate certificate with a minimum GPA of 3.3.
Graduate Certificate Applicants

Admission to Graduate Certificate programs at the University of Fairfax requires that applicants:
  • have at least five years of relevant professional experience, and
  • have earned a minimum of 90 undergraduate credits from an accredited institution.
ADMISSION PROCEDURES

All Applicants

To be admitted to degree or certificate programs at the University of Fairfax all applicants must:
  • complete and submit the Application for Admission along with a non-refundable application fee.
  • submit proof of graduation or previous credits earned (Acceptable documents include "Issued to Student" transcripts and copies of diplomas).
  • submit a resume or summary of employment history.
  • complete an interview with an Admissions Officer. Contact us.
  • request official academic transcript(s) from the college or university at which the highest degree and/or relevant academic credits were earned, to be received no later than the end of the first term of enrollment.
  • complete and submit the Program Declaration Form.
Doctoral Degree Applicants

In addition to the above, doctoral applicants must complete and submit the University of Fairfax Application for Doctorate in Information Assurance (DIA).

Conditional Admission

Upon submission of unofficial documentation, the applicant may be granted conditional admission. Official documentation must be received by the end of the first eight-week term of matriculation. If a student's official documentation has not been received within this timeframe, the student is not permitted to start the subsequent term.

Formal Admission

In all cases, official transcripts must be received by the Registrar prior to the start of the student's second term of matriculation. Once the official transcript is received, the applicant may be formally admitted to the program.
