Security Clearance

It is important for information security professionals to understand the security clearance process. Personnel security clearances often provide career advancement and job security. Obtaining a security clearance can be a difficult process. First, federal agencies often issue security clearances that are not interchangeable. Thus, some federal agencies do not recognize clearances issued by other federal agencies. However, the most prevalent clearances are those associated with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). Under these regulations, the clearance process can begin for an individual after the individual receives at least a contingent job offer-i.e., a job offer that is contingent upon the receipt of the clearance by the individual prior to beginning work. This scenario can work to a student's advantage. A number of federal agencies will initiate the clearance process for a student while he or she is still in school. Federal contractors can also initiate the process with a contingent job offer. The federal contractor must have a definite position vacancy that requires a security clearance.
