Experience

In order to successfully upgrade your career into a high-demand, rapidly growing career path such as Information Assurance, you need to obtain or possess the following:

  1. Good communication skills
  2. High motivation to work hard
  3. Project experience relevant to potential employers
  4. Career transition or upgrade skills (networking, interviewing, etc.)
  5. A career plan that builds on what you know

Many individuals seek a career transition that ignores their prior experience. However, that experience, earned with hard work over many years, is an extremely valuable asset that should not be ignored and should serve as the foundation for your next career move. You need to build on what you know and add to it. One example illustrates this career strategy: A nurse experiencing burnout sought a new career in IT. His compensation as a nurse was $48K/year. In 13 weeks, he became an IT professional and increased his compensation to $70K. How did he do this? He positioned his career search carefully by seeking employers who would value both his medical background and his IT skills. He found a position with a firm that manages clinical databases for new drug releases. His new employer valued both his medical background and his IT background. He could communicate with both the end users and the technical staff.

Our nurse was able to make this transition because he:

  1. Had communication skills valued by his new employer
  2. Had project experience relevant to his new position
  3. Had the motivation to work hard
  4. Built on his past experience
  5. Possessed the motivation to work hard on both developing new projects and using his career skills
